General Personal Statement Tips
- Type your Personal Statement (PS) into a word processor (i.e. MS Word) BEFORE typing them onto VMCAS. This way you can get an accurate count of characters and more easily make edits.
- Follow the basic rules of grammar:
- Don't use contractions.
- No abbvs. (i.e "vet med" = veterinary medicine, "ER" = emergency room)
- Avoid overly flowy sentences and fluffy adjectives, you don't have room to not be concise.
- This is a PERSONAL statement, it's okay to use I/me and first person tense.
- Eliminate hyperbole and assumptions. Assume your audience doesn't know very much about veterinary medicine.
- Avoid passive writing. Use active verbs whenever possible.
- Don't use contractions.
Don't know where to start when it comes to writing your PS?
Think about theses things and jot down some notes to get started:
- Why do you want to be a vet?
- When (and how) did you make your ADULT decision to become a vet?
- Unique experiences you've had (both in and out of the field of vet med)
- Specific cases that you remember from your veterinary hours/experiences
