Online it shows the average veterinary hours at around 3,000. Do I have to have that many veterinary experience hours to be considered competitive?
No! The minimum requirement from VMCAS for your application to be considered complete is 180 veterinary hours. Most successful applicants have between 500-1,000 veterinary hours. The 3,000 hour number is an average that includes nontraditional students, applicants who may have worked as veterinary technicians for many years before applying, or applicants whose family owns a veterinary clinic. These types of applicants could, in theory, have over 10,000 hours, which drives the average higher.
What should my undergraduate major be?
It doesn't matter! As long as you complete the pre-requisite courses, you can be any major you want! Common majors for pre-vet students include (but are definitely not limited to) Animal Science, Animal Biology, and General Biology.
What are PPI letters and do I need to do them?
PPI letters were an electronic evaluation system that UC Davis and Colorado State used instead of electronic letters of recommendation. These letters were discontinued by the company that hosted them, so you don't have to worry about them for veterinary school anymore!
